About The Project
The monastic and lay community of Mundgod, India
Many Tibetans fled Tibet during the
Communist invasion in the 1950s, and
through the kindness of the Indian
Government have since reestablished
small communities in regions around
in India that were allocated to
them. Mundgod, in Southern India is
one such settlement, fostering the
growth of monastic communities like
that of Gaden Monastery and other
Tibetan laypeople.
Gaden Monastery was formerly Tibet’s largest monastic university, and was destroyed during the Communist invasion in 1959. The monastery has since been reestablished in Mundgod, India in the 1960s through the hard work of the monks themselves, many of whom escaped from Tibet with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. The Monastery currently houses about 3,000 monks.
However, though they have been in India for over 40 years, the monastery and its surrounding villages still lack many basic amenities. The monastic community in particular is still dependent on donations from the international community to cover their minimal running costs and needs.
The need for medical support
Both the monks, nuns and laypeople are currently in desperate need of medical support and treatment. Illnesses like tuberculosis and diabetes, and dental problems are prominent among the monastic and lay community in Mundgod.
At present there is no formal medical treatment or care. Many of the older monks suffer their illnesses without treatment. These monks and Lamas are an integral part of the Tibetan settlement, and play an incredibly important role in teaching and bringing the benefit of Dharma teachings to the culture and the public. It is vital they receive the necessary support for their health and well-being.
Laypeople in the area also do not have access to any medical care. Their status often means that they do not receive welfare or support. This hospital has been constructed with the intention of providing support to all peoples of the region.

Equipping the clinic
Due to the kindness of sponsors, a clinic building has already been constructed in the Gaden Shartse Monastery (one of the two colleges in Gaden) but is currently empty. The clinic is in need of treatment, medicine and professional doctors to provide proper medical support.
As there is no local or international aid for the clinic and little awareness of this pressing need, Gaden Shartse Monastery is seeking to raise funds to start the clinic and maintain its yearly expenses. Funds will go towards equipping the hospital with basic equipment, medical supplies and medicines, and subsidizing a team of medical doctors.
Funds raised will go towards treated all prominent illnesses suffered by the monks, nuns and lay people of Mundgod by giving them continued necessary medical care and treatment. This hospital project benefits not only the monastic community in particular, but also directly responding to the needs of the the larger community as they work solely for the welfare and benefit of others.
